What is the real difference between Dekton and Silestone?
Silestone is a quartz-based composite: crushed stone and a binder are pressed into a dense slab with an even, repeatable colour. Dekton is sintered stone, where mineral material is compacted and fired into an extremely dense slab without a comparable binder. That leads to the practical difference: Dekton tolerates hot cookware and UV light, while Silestone is not intended for either.
- A Dekton slab is hard and often thin — the edge and the corner of a cut-out are its most delicate points.
- A Silestone slab is tougher and thicker, and the edge can be built up by laminating.

How does the difference show at the factory and during installation?
When cutting Dekton, the corners are radiused and the slab is supported along its full length, because stress concentrates exactly at the corners. The mitred edge, which gives a thin slab a massive look, is precision work and is done on the machine. With Silestone there are more edge profiles to choose from and the work moves faster.
In installation the difference is in the support. A thin sintered slab needs a flat base along its entire length, especially over the dishwasher and the oven. In both materials the sink mounting, tap holes and hob recess are machined at the factory in advance, so nothing gets drilled in your kitchen on installation day.
Which handles heat, sun and outdoor use?
Dekton. It tolerates hot cookware and constant UV light, so it suits an outdoor kitchen, a glazed terrace and spots next to large windows. Silestone belongs indoors and on a trivet. If your plans include a barbecue kitchen in the garden or an island in front of a south-facing window, this is where the choice is made.
In an indoor kitchen the difference is smaller than the internet often suggests. Both stand up to daily use, as long as hot cookware goes on a trivet and cutting happens on a board. What we see at installations is that the condition of a surface rarely comes down to the material: it comes down to how the edge is finished and how the top is supported at the sink and the oven.
