What is measured on stone stairs, and why?
Stairs are rarely exactly the same from one tread to the next. The dimensions of a concrete pour or a stair frame vary, so we laser measure every tread separately and number the stones in installation order. At the same time we check the riser height, tread depth, the nosing design and whether there will be side skirting stones. When every piece has its own place, the joints stay even and nothing extra has to be sawn on installation day. The drawing is gone through with you before machining. One contact person handles the whole chain.
The location decides the material and finish. Indoors a polished finish looks good, but on stairs it is better to favour a matt or honed finish that is not slippery in socks. Outdoors the choice is flamed or brushed granite, which withstands frost and salt and has the roughness needed for anti-slip. Ceramic works on indoor stairs as a thin, scratch-resistant tread. At the measurement we tell you which combination works on your stairs. You can look at samples at your leisure before deciding. We have more than 100 stone materials in stock.
What you get when you order directly from the factory
Every tread measured separately
We laser measure the treads one at a time and number the stones in installation order. This way an uneven concrete pour does not show in the result and the joints stay even. The pieces fit into place at the first attempt.
Anti-slip on outdoor stairs too
For outdoor stairs we choose flamed or brushed granite, which stays rough even when wet. The surface withstands frost, meltwater and gritting year after year. Grooves can also be cut into the nosing.
Withstands wear for decades
Granite and ceramic withstand shoes, grit and cleaning better than wood or laminate. Stairs are the hardest-wearing surface in the home, so the material should be chosen accordingly.

Granite
The first choice for outdoor stairs. A flamed or brushed finish provides anti-slip, and the stone withstands frost and gritting. Sealing is renewed from time to time.
Ceramic
A thin, scratch-resistant tread for indoor stairs. Also withstands heat and UV light, so it suits a sunny stairwell and terrace steps.
Marble
A striking indoor staircase for a representative space. More sensitive to acids and wear, so it needs care and a matt finish because of slipperiness.
Limestone
A soft, calm surface that develops a patina with use. Suits indoor stairs when you accept the marks of time and look after it regularly.

From measurement to installation
Measurement
We laser measure every tread and riser on top of the finished stair frame. We agree the finish, nosing design, anti-slip and whether there will be side skirting stones. The stones are numbered on the drawing.
Production at our own factory
The treads and risers are cut on CNC machines at our factory in Estonia to each individual dimension. The nosings are profiled, anti-slip grooves are milled and the surface is finished with the chosen treatment. The pieces are marked in installation order.
Delivery
Delivery and installation in Finland — 14 working days from drawing approval. The stones arrive numbered and protected, so the right piece is found immediately for the right tread.
Installation
We install the treads and risers in order from bottom to top, level the heights and seal the joints. We go through the stairs with you and give care instructions for the surface.

How long does it take to make stone stairs?

On stairs the measurement is especially important, because every tread is measured separately and machined to its own dimensions. The schedule therefore starts from the measurement day. We agree the installation day right at the measurement and tell you how long the stairs cannot be used. One contact person keeps you up to date.
Are stone stairs slippery?
A polished finish can be slippery, so for stairs a honed, brushed or flamed finish is usually chosen. On outdoor stairs we use flamed or brushed granite, which stays rough when wet and icy. If needed we mill anti-slip grooves into the nosing. At the measurement we tell you which finish suits the use and location of your stairs. You can also try samples at home.
Do stone stairs withstand the Finnish winter outdoors?
Yes, when the material and installation are right. For outdoor stairs we choose frost-resistant granite with a flamed or brushed finish. Just as important is that water can drain away and does not stand on the tread or under the joint. We check the falls at the measurement and make the joints with materials suitable for outdoor use.
Can stone be installed over old stairs?
Often it can. On concrete stairs the stone is usually installed directly over the old surface, as long as the base is load-bearing and reasonably intact. On wooden stairs we check the stiffness of the frame and the change in riser height, because the stone increases the thickness of the tread. We assess the situation at the measurement and tell you straight if the base needs to be repaired first.
